In Need Of A New Power Protection Solution? Start With These Components In Mind.

Customers in need of a new power protection configuration face a complicated process. Evaluating different brands, price points, shipping timelines, and product types can be overwhelming, even for experienced professionals. Further complicating the situation are customers who have just experienced a configuration failure and need power protection immediately.

Ace Real Time Solutions recommends that all customers, regardless of the situational factors, start with these basic components in mind. Doing so helps narrow down the scope of options and target a proper solution faster.

Identify a target runtime. Take the time to understand how long the configuration needs to run in the event of a power outage. It is important to establish a reasonable runtime estimate that meets operational requirements but does not yield so much runtime that the hardware will never be used.

Calculate the target capacity. The display panel on uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units shows a calculated load. Adjust the load for any future equipment changes and divide it by .80. The result is the load that the new UPS must cover.

Confirm the input and output connectors and voltages. Two commonly overlooked factors are the input and output connectors and voltages. Connectors and voltages are typical inconsistencies with new configurations that end up causing problems.

Evaluate the extras. Take time to think about what extras are available and if your team will need these now or in the future. Important extras are outlined below.

  • Extended battery packs. A good way to add runtime in the future is with battery packs, but you need to plan for it in advance.
  • UPS Management. There are plenty of management options from online software to APC SmartConnect to Network Management Cards (NMCs). Think about how your organization intends to manage the configuration.
  • Physical Aspects. UPS units and accessories come in various sizes and can take up a lot of space. Take note of the rack mount or tower options, dimensions of the hardware, and weight of the final configuration.

Customers and service providers who start with runtime, target capacity, connectors and voltages, and extras will increase the likelihood that the final solution is compatible with their operational requirements and technological capabilities making for a good long-term investment.
